Rules of the Game

• Introduction

Climbing Xiangqi (攀爬棋, pān pá chí) is a variant of xiangqi (Chinese chess), similar to Dark Chess (暗棋, also known as Banqi, Half Chess, Blind Chess, etc.), and created by lì tŕ (and his friends).
The game is played on a board with a 4*4 grid, using all of the 32 pieces in a standard xiangqi set.

• Pieces

There are 2 colors and 7 types of pieces: (in the order of their ranks, highest to lowest)
1. shuài/jiàng (General): 1 each
2. shì/shì (Advisor): 2 each
3. xiàng/xiàng (Elephant): 2 each
4. / (Chariot): 2 each
5. / (Horse): 2 each
6. pào/pào (Cannon): 2 each
7. bīng/ (Soldier): 5 each
Note: 俥 and 車 can also be pronounced "chē". 砲 can also be written as 包.

• Setup

• Flip all 32 pieces face-down and shuffle them, then stack 2 pieces in each of the 16 squares.

• Gameplay

• The player who goes first starts the game by flipping a piece up. The color of this piece is their color, and the other color is the color of the player going second.
• The two players alternate turns. On their turn, a player has to flip a piece up, or move 1 of their pieces, capture or not.
• A player loses if they cannot make a move on their turn. The other player wins. (The game does not end as long as the turn player has a move to make, even if all of their 16 pieces have been captured.)
• Therefore, you should try to capture or "step" onto the opponent's pieces so that they run out of moves and you win.

• How pieces move

• Only the top piece in a square can be flipped, moved or captured.
• All pieces move the same way (when not capturing).
• When a piece moves (without making a capture), it can only move to the top of one of its orthogonally adjacent squares (up, down, left or right), and can only move there if it stays in the same level, goes 1 level higher, or 1 level lower. Basically, a piece cannot move 2 or more levels up or down at once.
• The highest level a piece can go to is level 3; you cannot stack 4 or more pieces in the same square.

• How pieces capture

• A piece can capture another by removing it and moving to where it was.
• All pieces can only capture pieces of the other color.
• All pieces can only capture pieces that are on the same level as themselves.
/ can capture any piece except /.
/, /, / and / can only capture pieces of the same or lower ranks.
/ can capture any piece (but they move differently from other pieces when capturing).
/ can only capture / and /.
• Except /, all pieces capture the same way as they move, but can only capture pieces on the same level as themselves.
/ can (and can only) capture any piece of the same row or column, as long as:
  1. The target piece is on the same level as the / itself.
  2. There is exactly 1 square where the top piece is on a level as high as or higher than that of the / itself, between the target piece and the / itself.

That's basically it. Hope you enjoy the game!
